Mulligan’s Flat Nature Reserve is a combination of natural habitat, rich Indigenous history and colourful European heritage. It comprises part of the Canberra Nature Park and has long been recognised as one of the best bird-watching sites in the ACT, home to the rare Regent Honey-eaters and Forde's own Superb Fairy Wren. It also sustains a host of endangered animals and native grasses.

The Mulligan’s Flat region was the traditional land of the Ngunnawal people and features a number of important Aboriginal sites. Europeans first settled in the area in 1820 and remains of the colonial huts, fences, shearing sheds and schools dot the local landscape. From the sacred sites of the Ngunnawal people to the colonial era Old Gundaroo Road, Forde’s past is etched into the landscape.
