Welcome Nights
Neighbours meet at first Forde welcome
Forde’s founding families have taken time out to meet and mingle at the community’s first Welcome Night.
Held on 25 June at the Forde Sales and Information Centre, the evening gave new and settled residents the chance to meet their neighbours informally over a drink. Residents also picked up their Welcome Pack, which contains helpful tips and information to assist their move to Forde.
Forde Project Director Gavin Kemp, along with key members of the project team, welcomed seven families to the evening and gave a brief update on the construction and planning for the community.
New Forde resident Kira Jorgensen said she enjoyed the evening.
“The welcome night was a good chance to meet not only neighbours but also the great team of people behind the development and planning of our suburb,” she said.
“It was really interesting to listen to how the suburb has come together and what was in the future plans. It is certainly well planned and we enjoy all the parkland that his going to be so accessible. Hopefully more families will come to the next welcome night so we can meet some more of our neighbours as we are not only new to Forde but new to Canberra also so come along!!”

Forde Landscaping and Sustainability Day
Forde reveals tips to nurturing sustainable gardens
Over 300 amateur gardeners learned the tricks to creating beautiful and sustainable gardens at Forde’s Landscaping and Sustainability Day in June.
On the cool but sunny Sunday, garden experts from Yarralumla Nursery and other local groups offered families tips on how to create beautiful, environmentally-sustainable gardens and ease the pressure on Canberra water resources.
Fictional Environment expert Sir Siegfried Hinklebottom kept the kids entertained throughout the day in Mulligans Flat, where the children discovered some of the natural wonders in their own big backyard. The children encountered kangaroos, remnants of the old school house and some amazing little creatures named lurps.
Attendees also enjoyed a delicious barbecue provided by Mitchell-Gungahlin Rotary Club.
Forde Project Director Gavin Kemp said the day was a huge success.
“I think everyone who attended walked away with some great tips on how to conserve precious natural resources, including energy, water and nutrients, while creating beautiful and sustainable gardens,” he said.
“Parks and gardens that have not been designed for the surrounding environment can require regular watering to keep them looking good, fertilisers to keep the plants healthy and pesticides to control unwanted bugs and weeds to help create an appealing environment.”
Forde’s Landscaping and Sustainability Day was jam-packed with seminars and displays on a range of sustainability topics, including sustainable garden design, frog-friendly gardens, and minimising dangerous greenhouse gas emissions.

Mulligans Flat Walk
On Sunday 30 March, over 30 people gathered for a guided walk through Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, to hear talks from local conservation experts on the reserve, the rare and endangered species that call it home, and future plans for its management.
The walk was co-hosted by the Conservation Council and Forde Developments, and featured presenters from the ANU, CSIRO, ACT Parks, Conservation and Lands, Ginninderra Catchment Group, and Canberra Ornithologists Group.
“We are very happy to have had our first group of future Forde residents come and explore Mulligans Flat,” said Sarah Davies of the Conservation Council.
“The Forde community will be able play a central role in the protection of Mulligans Flat, and can make a huge contribution through very simple actions, from ensuring that pest plants aren’t planted in Forde gardens, to making sure pollution doesn’t enter water catchments,” said Ms Davies.
“The Conservation Council congratulates Forde developments for providing opportunities for residents to get involved in conservation activities, and is looking forward to working with Forde on a number of events over the coming months.”
